Malak is the Teaching Associate at The Centre for Human-Inspired AI (CHIA) at Cambridge University and has a PhD in Design Engineering from Imperial College London. She also has a Master’s degree in Human Computer Interaction from the University of St Andrews, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering with a minor in Digital Media from the American University in Cairo.

While Malak’s background is more technical, her main interest lies at the intersection of AI and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), which has allowed her to also make use of her love of humanities, social sciences, and design. Malak’s research focus is on aligning conversational AI with human values and designing more human-centred AI experiences using participatory approaches.

Malak has also had several years of experience consulting companies on how to create human-centred AI products, and working with UN Women UK, The Alan Turing Institute, Bold Insight, and AIxDesign.
